ADA Compliance Checklist for Attorney Websites - ADA Website Accessibility for Law Firms

Written by Derrick Tulali — SEO Expert with 9+ Years Experience

I’ve audited hundreds of law firm websites over the past nine years, and one pattern shows up again and again: attorneys who are meticulous about compliance in their legal practice have websites that would fail a basic ADA accessibility review. That gap matters more in 2026 than it ever has before.

The Department of Justice published its final web accessibility rule in March 2024, formally requiring state and local government entities to meet WCAG 2.1 Level AA standards. Private law firms aren’t government entities, but that rule shifted the expectations courts use when evaluating ADA Title III claims against businesses — including law firms. The DOJ’s own fact sheet on the web rule is worth reading if you want to understand the current regulatory landscape. Plaintiffs’ attorneys are watching, and demand letters targeting inaccessible law firm websites have increased steadily since 2022.

Why Attorney Sites Get Targeted?

Law firm websites are attractive targets for ADA lawsuits for a specific reason: they handle legal intake. If a person with a disability can’t fill out your contact form, can’t read your practice area pages with a screen reader, or can’t navigate your site using a keyboard, they’re being denied access to legal services. That’s the core of a Title III claim under the ADA.

In my experience, the law firms most at risk aren’t the ones with obviously broken websites. They’re the firms that had a new site built three or four years ago, thought the job was done, and never revisited accessibility. A lot of WordPress themes and legal website templates are built to look good in a browser — not to work with assistive technology.

The Checklist: What to Actually Audit

Before touching any code, run your site through two tools: the WAVE Web Accessibility Evaluation Tool and Google Lighthouse (built into Chrome DevTools). Neither tool catches everything, but together they’ll surface the highest-priority issues fast.

Here’s what I look for when auditing an attorney website.

Image alt text. Every image on your site needs a text alternative that describes the image’s purpose. A photo of your law firm’s office building gets alt text. A decorative divider line gets an empty alt attribute so screen readers skip it. I see law firms with forty or fifty images and zero alt text constantly.

Heading structure. Your pages need a logical H1 through H6 hierarchy. Screen reader users navigate by headings the way sighted users scan visually. If your site uses bold text styled to look like headings instead of actual heading tags, a screen reader user gets nothing useful.

Color contrast. WCAG 2.1 Level AA requires a contrast ratio of at least 4.5:1 for normal text. A lot of law firm sites use light gray text on white backgrounds because it looks elegant. It fails contrast requirements. The WebAIM Contrast Checker is free and takes thirty seconds to use.

Keyboard navigation. Unplug your mouse and try to navigate your entire site using only the Tab, Enter, and arrow keys. Can you reach every menu item? Can you open and close dropdown menus? Can you get to and submit your contact form? If you get stuck anywhere, so will users who rely on keyboards or switch devices.

Contact forms and intake forms. This is where I see the most critical failures on law firm sites. An accessible contact form for lawyers needs visible, properly associated labels on every field — not just placeholder text that disappears when someone starts typing. Error messages need to be specific and announced to screen readers. Required fields need to be identified in a way that doesn’t rely solely on color.

Video captions. If your firm has video content — attorney bios, practice area explainers, client testimonials — every video needs accurate captions. Auto-generated captions from YouTube are not sufficient for compliance. They mishandle proper names, legal terms, and anything with background noise.

PDF documents. Fee agreements, intake packets, and legal guides posted as PDFs need to be tagged for accessibility. An untagged PDF is essentially invisible to a screen reader. Adobe Acrobat Pro has a built-in accessibility checker; use it before posting any PDF.

Mobile accessibility. WCAG 2.1 added three new success criteria specifically addressing touch targets and motion. Tap targets — buttons, links, form fields — need to be large enough to activate without accidentally hitting adjacent elements. This is a common failure on law firm sites with small “call now” buttons packed tightly together.

What a Remediation Plan Looks Like?

After identifying issues, prioritize by impact. Fix anything that blocks access to your contact form or intake process first. Then address heading structure and image alt text across your main practice area pages. Video captions and PDF remediation can follow in a second pass.

The firms I’ve worked with that stay ahead of ADA claims treat accessibility as an ongoing process, not a one-time fix. New content gets added to sites constantly — blog posts, staff photos, new service pages. Each piece of new content needs to meet the same standards as the rest of the site.

That’s one reason I recommend tools that automate accessibility monitoring. At Acute SEO AI, our AI accessibility scanner monitors law firm websites for WCAG 2.1 violations on a continuous basis and flags new issues as they appear. Clients also check our client reviews to see how other law firms have responded to accessibility remediation. Catching a missing alt tag on a new blog post the day it goes live is a lot better than finding it in a demand letter six months later.

For broader context on how accessibility intersects with law firm SEO and technical performance, resources like Search Engine Journal and Moz cover the technical side of accessible web structure regularly. Accessible sites tend to perform better in search for measurable reasons — cleaner code, better heading structure, faster load times.

Take Action Before You Get a Demand Letter

If you haven’t audited your firm’s website for ADA compliance in the past twelve months, do it this week. Start with a free WAVE scan, then check your contact form with a screen reader (NVDA is free for Windows; VoiceOver is built into Mac). What you find will tell you a lot.

If you’d rather have professionals handle the audit and remediation, reach out today for a consultation. We work specifically with law firms on law firm SEO services and accessibility, and we can walk you through exactly what needs to change on your site and in what order.

The goal isn’t just to avoid a lawsuit. An accessible website serves every potential client who lands on it — including the 26 percent of American adults who live with some form of disability and may need a lawyer just as much as anyone else.
