ADA Compliance Checklist for Attorney Websites - ADA Website Accessibility for Law Firms

Written by Derrick Tulali — SEO Expert with 9+ Years Experience

Most law firm websites I audit in 2026 have the same problem: the attorney spent real money on design, photography, and SEO, but nobody checked whether a visually impaired person could actually use the site. That gap creates legal exposure and costs the firm clients it never knew it lost.

This post walks through the specific areas where attorney websites fail on accessibility, why those failures matter, and what you can do about each one.

Why Law Firms Are Actively Getting Sued?

The Department of Justice published its final web accessibility rule in March 2024, clarifying that state and local government websites must meet WCAG 2.1 Level AA standards. Private businesses, including law firms, face liability under Title III of the ADA even without that specific rule. Serial plaintiffs and advocacy groups have filed thousands of website accessibility lawsuits, and law firms are not exempt. In fact, a firm that gets sued over its inaccessible website while representing ADA clients is in a particularly awkward position.

The DOJ’s own guidance makes clear that websites are considered places of public accommodation under the ADA. Courts have largely agreed. That makes your firm’s website a legal liability if it cannot be used by people with disabilities.

What WCAG 2.1 Level AA Actually Requires?

WCAG stands for Web Content Accessibility Guidelines. Level AA is the standard most courts and regulators point to when evaluating whether a website is accessible. It covers four main categories: perceivable, operable, understandable, and robust. For a law firm site, the practical translation looks like this.

Every image needs descriptive alt text — not “img_0042.jpg,” but something like “Attorney Sarah Chen speaking at the Nevada State Bar conference.” Every video needs synchronized captions. Color contrast between text and background must meet a 4.5:1 ratio for normal text. The entire site must be usable with only a keyboard, no mouse required. And error messages on forms must actually tell users what went wrong, not just flash red around a field.

I’ve pulled dozens of law firm sites through accessibility scanners and the same failures show up repeatedly: images with no alt text, contact forms that trap keyboard users, PDF documents with no text layer, and videos recorded without captions.

The Contact Form Problem Is Bigger Than You Think

The intake form is where a potential client either becomes a lead or gives up and calls a competitor. For someone using a screen reader, a poorly built contact form is often a dead end. Screen reader software reads the page aloud, and if your form fields don’t have proper labels, the user hears “edit text” instead of “your full name.” They have no idea what to type.

Beyond labels, most law firm forms fail on error handling. If a user skips a required field, the form should announce the error clearly — in text, not just with a color change — and move focus to the problem field. That’s a basic WCAG requirement that most off-the-shelf WordPress form plugins don’t handle correctly out of the box.

Our AI contact form replaces static forms with a conversational intake experience that’s built for accessibility from the ground up. It guides users through questions one at a time, which removes most of the labeling and error-handling issues that make traditional forms inaccessible.

PDFs Are a Hidden Liability

Law firms publish a lot of PDFs: fee agreements, intake packets, case summaries. A scanned PDF is just an image — screen readers cannot read it at all. Even PDFs created from Word documents often fail accessibility checks because headings, reading order, and table structures aren’t tagged properly.

In my experience, this is the most overlooked issue on attorney websites. A firm will spend hours making sure their homepage passes an accessibility checker, then leave a completely inaccessible intake packet sitting on their resources page. The fix is to run every PDF through Adobe Acrobat’s accessibility checker and remediate the tagging before publishing.

Keyboard Navigation and Focus Indicators

Any user who can’t operate a mouse — whether because of a motor disability, a temporary injury, or simply a preference for keyboard navigation — relies on Tab, Enter, and arrow keys to move through a webpage. WCAG requires that every interactive element is reachable by keyboard and that a visible focus indicator shows which element is currently selected.

Most attorney websites I see have either removed focus indicators entirely (because a developer thought the dotted outline looked ugly) or have a navigation menu that traps keyboard users in a loop. Both are clear WCAG violations.

Test this yourself: close your mouse, open your website, and press Tab repeatedly. If you can’t reach and activate every link, button, and form field, you have a problem.

Running an Actual Audit

Automated tools catch roughly 30 to 40 percent of accessibility issues. Tools like those referenced by Search Engine Journal in their coverage of technical SEO can flag the obvious problems, but manual testing is necessary for the rest. That means testing with an actual screen reader like NVDA (free, Windows) or VoiceOver (built into Mac and iPhone), testing keyboard-only navigation, and reviewing documents separately.

Our AI accessibility scanner at Acute SEO AI goes further than basic checkers by identifying context-dependent failures that rule-based tools miss — things like ambiguous link text (“click here”) or form fields where the label is visually close but not programmatically associated with the input.

See what our clients say about the audits we’ve run for their firms. The feedback is consistent: they had no idea how many issues existed until we showed them.

Maintenance Is Not Optional

Accessibility is not a one-time fix. Every time you add a new blog post, upload a new video, or install a plugin, you potentially introduce new violations. A firm that passed an audit in early 2025 may be non-compliant by mid-2026 simply because of routine content updates.

Build accessibility into your publishing workflow. Check images for alt text before publishing. Caption every video. Test new form fields before they go live. For firms that produce a lot of content, an automated monitoring tool that flags new issues is worth the cost.

Getting Your Firm’s Site into Compliance

Start with a real audit — not just a free online scanner. Document what you find, prioritize fixes by severity, and work through them systematically. High-contrast text, proper alt text, and labeled form fields are quick wins. PDF remediation and keyboard navigation fixes usually take more time.

If you want a team that has done this for law firms specifically, learn more about our experience and then request a demo to see how our tools work on your actual site. We’ll show you exactly where your site stands and what it takes to get compliant.

The firms that fix this now avoid lawsuits, serve more clients, and often see better search rankings as a side effect. The ones that wait get demand letters.
