ADA Compliance Checklist for Home Service Websites

ADA Compliance Checklist for Home Service Websites

Written by Derrick Tulali — SEO Expert with 9+ Years Experience

Most home service businesses — plumbers, electricians, HVAC techs, landscapers — have spent real money getting a website built. But very few have ever asked whether that site actually works for someone who is blind, uses a keyboard instead of a mouse, or relies on a screen reader to browse the web. That gap is exactly where ADA website compliance small business lawsuits originate, and the number of those lawsuits has climbed every year since 2018.

This post gives you a working checklist you can use right now to spot the most damaging problems on your home service site — before someone else finds them for you.

Why Home Service Sites Get Flagged?

Demand letters and federal complaints tend to target businesses with high local traffic and easy-to-spot violations. Home service companies fit that profile perfectly. You have a booking form. You probably have a phone number buried in an image. You likely have a photo gallery of past jobs with no alt text on any image.

In my experience auditing sites for local contractors and home service providers, those three issues alone — inaccessible forms, image-based text, and missing alt attributes — account for the majority of violations I find. The Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1 are the technical standard courts now use to evaluate whether a site is accessible, and failing even a handful of criteria can expose you.

The DOJ published a final rule on web accessibility in 2024 that pushed all state and local government entities to meet WCAG 2.1 Level AA. Private businesses operating under Title III — which covers most home service companies with a physical presence — are not under the same federal mandate yet, but courts have consistently ruled that your website is a “place of public accommodation.” That reasoning is what plaintiffs’ attorneys use, and it holds up.

The Checklist: What to Review on Your Site

Images and Visual Content

Every image on your site needs descriptive alt text. This includes before-and-after project photos, team headshots, service area maps, and any promotional graphics. If your logo is an image, the alt text should say what the logo says, not just “logo.”

Where businesses make the real mistake is contact pages. I have seen dozens of sites where the phone number is embedded inside a JPG or PNG file — meaning a screen reader reads nothing. That number might as well not exist for a visually impaired visitor. Pull any image containing text and replace it with actual HTML text.

Forms and Booking Systems

Your contact and booking forms are arguably the most important accessibility targets on a home service website. Every form field needs a label that is programmatically associated with the input — not just placeholder text that disappears when someone starts typing. Placeholder text fails WCAG 1.3.1 because assistive technology may not reliably read it.

Error messages matter too. If someone fills out your booking form incorrectly, the error needs to identify which field failed and explain how to fix it. A red border around a box means nothing to someone using a screen reader. Our AI contact form addresses this directly — it guides users through intake in a conversational format that sidesteps most traditional form accessibility problems.

Keyboard Navigation

Unplug your mouse and try to use your site. Can you tab through the navigation? Can you open dropdown menus, reach the booking form, and submit it using only a keyboard? If focus indicators disappear — meaning you cannot see where you are on the page as you tab — that is a WCAG 2.4.7 failure.

This one catches a lot of WordPress sites because many popular themes strip out the browser’s default focus styles in their CSS. The developer may have done it to make the site look cleaner, but the result is a site that is functionally unusable for keyboard-only users.

Color Contrast

WCAG 2.1 Level AA requires a contrast ratio of at least 4.5:1 for normal text and 3:1 for large text. Gray text on a white background — very common in modern minimalist designs — fails this threshold constantly. Tools like the WebAIM Contrast Checker let you test any color combination in about 30 seconds.

Video and Audio

If you have a video on your site — a company intro, a how-to, a testimonial — it needs captions. Auto-generated captions from YouTube are a starting point but usually contain errors and often miss speaker identification. For audio-only content like a podcast or recorded testimonial, a text transcript is required.

Accessibility Widgets: Helpful but Not Sufficient

A lot of home service business owners install a website accessibility widget — a small floating icon that lets users adjust font size, contrast, or cursor size — and assume the compliance box is checked. It is not. Widgets can help users customize their experience, but they do not fix underlying code problems. A missing form label is still missing. Keyboard navigation that is broken stays broken.

At Acute SEO AI, we have seen clients who had a widget installed for two years and still received demand letters, because the widget was not touching the structural issues under the hood. Our AI accessibility tool runs a WCAG 2.1 compliance scan and applies automated fixes at the code level — not just a cosmetic layer on top.

What a Real Audit Looks Like?

A proper accessibility audit for a home service site runs through every page template — homepage, service pages, contact page, blog — not just the homepage. Most sites use the same header and footer across every page, so a navigation problem multiplies across your entire site. An audit should combine automated scanning with manual testing, because automated tools catch roughly 30 to 40 percent of WCAG issues according to research published by Deque Systems. The rest require a human reviewer.

Our client reviews reflect how consistently this process turns up problems business owners did not know existed — and how much easier remediation is when you catch issues early rather than after a demand letter arrives.

For more guidance on technical site issues that affect both accessibility and search performance, the Ahrefs Blog and Search Engine Journal both publish solid technical resources worth bookmarking.

Take the Next Step

If you have never had your site reviewed for accessibility, start with the checklist above. Look at your forms, your images, your color contrast, and try keyboard navigation. Then get a professional scan done — the DIY review will surface obvious problems, but it will miss the code-level issues that matter most in a legal context.

Reach out today to schedule a demo and see exactly where your site stands. Our AI accessibility scanner can give you a detailed picture of your compliance gaps in 2026 and a clear path to fixing them before they become a legal problem.
