ADA Compliance Priorities New Law Firms Miss

Written by Derrick Tulali — SEO Expert with 9+ Years Experience

Most new law firms spend months getting their website right — the branding, the practice area pages, the contact form. Then they launch, start driving traffic, and never think about accessibility. That’s where the exposure starts.

I’ve worked with dozens of attorneys who discovered their ADA compliance gaps only after receiving a demand letter. By that point, the fixes cost far more in legal fees and rushed development than they would have during the build. This post focuses on the specific mistakes I see most often with newer law firm websites, and what to fix before you end up on the wrong end of a complaint.

Why New Law Firm Sites Are Frequent Targets?

Law firm websites launched in the last two years carry a false sense of security. Attorneys assume that because they hired a professional developer or used a premium WordPress theme, the site must be compliant. That assumption is wrong more often than not.

Under the Americans with Disabilities Act — and now reinforced by the Department of Justice’s 2024 web accessibility rule — law firms that serve the public are expected to maintain websites that people with disabilities can actually use. The standard baseline is WCAG 2.1 Level AA. In 2026, courts and plaintiffs’ attorneys are treating that baseline as a meaningful floor, not a suggestion.

Demand letters targeting small and mid-size law firms have been consistent for several years. According to data from Search Engine Journal, legal and financial services firms remain among the most frequently targeted industries in ADA website litigation. The combination of a professional appearance, identifiable revenue, and overlooked accessibility details makes them easy picks.

The Intake Form Problem

This is the one that surprises attorneys most. Your contact form — the one where potential clients enter their name, phone number, and describe their legal issue — is often the most inaccessible element on the entire site.

Common problems I find: form labels that aren’t programmatically associated with their input fields, error messages that don’t identify which field failed, and submit buttons that can’t be activated with a keyboard alone. A person using a screen reader may not be able to complete your intake form at all. That means you’re not just excluding them from your website — you’re excluding them from accessing legal services.

An AI-guided contact form built with accessibility in mind handles this differently. Proper label association, clear error identification, keyboard operability, and sufficient color contrast are baked in rather than bolted on later. I’ve seen firms switch from a broken static form to an accessible one and immediately stop fielding complaints about usability.

Images Without Alt Text Still Dominate

Attorney headshots, courtroom stock photos, firm logo variations — almost every law firm site is full of images. A significant portion of them have no alt text, empty alt attributes on informational images, or decorative images that are incorrectly marked as meaningful.

The fix is straightforward but tedious. Every image that conveys information needs descriptive alt text. Every decorative image needs an empty alt attribute (`alt=””`) so screen readers skip it. If your site runs on WordPress, this is editable directly in the media library. If you’re not sure where to start, our WordPress web design and development team can audit your image library and fix it at the source.

Color Contrast Failures on “Professional” Designs

Law firm websites tend to favor understated color palettes — navy, gray, charcoal, white. That sounds like it should be safe, but I regularly run WCAG contrast checks and find text that fails the 4.5:1 ratio required for normal-sized body copy. Light gray text on a white background is the most common failure I see. It looks clean to a sighted user with no visual impairment and is completely unreadable for someone with low vision.

Free tools like the Ahrefs browser extension or dedicated contrast checkers can help you spot these quickly. But if you want a systematic pass, the AI Accessibility WCAG 2.1 compliance scanner from Acute SEO AI flags contrast failures across every page, not just the ones you manually test.

Video Content Without Captions

Law firms are producing more video content in 2026 — attorney introductions, FAQ walkthroughs, case result summaries. WCAG 2.1 Level AA requires captions for all prerecorded audio content in video, and those captions must be accurate. Auto-generated captions from YouTube or Zoom rarely meet that bar without manual correction. I’ve reviewed legal video content where auto-captions turned “personal injury” into “personal injury” correctly but mangled attorney names, case types, and legal terminology throughout. That’s not accessible — it’s just captioned.

Accurate captions also have an SEO benefit. Search engines can index that text. Backlinko’s research consistently shows that video pages with transcripts and captions outperform those without in organic search.

Navigation and Keyboard Access

Tab through your own site. Seriously — unplug your mouse and navigate your homepage using only the Tab, Enter, and arrow keys. Many law firm websites fail this test almost immediately. Dropdown menus that only open on hover, modal pop-ups that trap keyboard focus, skip navigation links that are missing entirely — these are all real barriers for users who rely on keyboards or assistive technology.

The WCAG 2.1 specification addresses keyboard accessibility under Success Criterion 2.1.1. Every interactive element on your site — navigation, forms, modals, chatbots — must be operable without a mouse. If you use an AI chatbot on your site, make sure it’s keyboard accessible too. A poorly built chat widget can actually create new violations while trying to improve user experience.

How to Approach the Fix in 2026?

Start with a structured audit. Automated scanners catch about 30 to 40 percent of accessibility issues — they’re a useful starting point but not sufficient on their own. Manual testing with a screen reader (NVDA on Windows is free, VoiceOver on Mac is built-in) will surface failures that no scanner catches.

If you’re a smaller firm without a dedicated development team, this is where working with specialists pays off. The team at Acute SEO AI has worked with law firms ranging from solo practitioners to regional multi-office operations. You can see what our clients say about the process before committing to anything.

Accessibility isn’t a one-time fix either. Every time you add a new page, a new practice area, a new video, or a new form, you introduce potential new issues. Building a review step into your content process costs very little and keeps you on the right side of compliance.

Take Action Now

If you’re not sure where your site stands, the AI Accessibility scanner is the fastest way to get a real picture of what needs attention. It identifies WCAG 2.1 Level AA failures across your entire site and provides actionable remediation guidance — not a vague report.
