Alt Text and ADA Website Compliance in 2026

Written by Derrick Tulali — SEO Expert with 9+ Years Experience

What is the Role of Alt Text in ADA Website Compliance?

Alt text is the written description attached to an image in your website’s HTML. Screen readers — software used by people who are blind or have low vision — read that description aloud. Without it, a screen reader either skips the image entirely or announces something useless like “image_03847.jpg.” That gap makes your content inaccessible to a significant portion of users, and it puts your site in direct violation of WCAG 2.1 Success Criterion 1.1.1, which requires every non-text element to have a text alternative.

Under ADA website compliance, images that convey information must have descriptive alt text. Decorative images — ones that add no meaning — should have an empty alt attribute (`alt=””`) so screen readers skip them without confusion. The distinction matters more than most site owners realize, and it’s something I see mishandled constantly in the accessibility audits we run for clients.

Why Alt Text Is More Specific Than Most People Think?

There’s a common misconception that any alt text is better than none. That’s not quite true. WCAG Level AA — the standard most businesses need to meet under current ADA guidance from the DOJ — requires alt text to be functional, not just present.

A photo of a lawyer shaking hands with a client tagged `alt=”image”` satisfies nothing. A photo of a product with `alt=”red shoe”` when the shoe is actually a navy loafer creates misinformation for the user. In my experience, the most common alt text failures I see fall into three categories: missing alt attributes entirely, keyword-stuffed alt tags written for SEO without regard for actual image content, and empty alt attributes applied to images that are actually informative.

The SEO angle is worth acknowledging here. Google’s crawlers cannot interpret images the way humans do. Alt text helps search engines understand image content, which feeds into image search rankings and overall page relevance. But the accessibility requirement and the SEO benefit only align when the alt text is genuinely descriptive and accurate. Stuffing keywords into alt text to game rankings violates both the spirit of WCAG and good SEO practice. Resources like the Ahrefs blog and Moz have documented how Google penalizes manipulative alt text, which reinforces that doing it right for accessibility is also doing it right for search.

How Alt Text Fits Into Broader WCAG Compliance?

Alt text is one piece of a larger picture. WCAG 2.1 organizes accessibility requirements across four principles: Perceivable, Operable, Understandable, and Robust. Alt text falls under Perceivable — the idea that all content must be presented in ways users can access, regardless of disability.

But Perceivable doesn’t stand alone. A screen reader user navigating your site also depends on keyboard navigation, logical heading structure, and properly coded form fields. If your site has solid alt text but broken tab order or unlabeled form inputs, you’re still failing users and still exposed to legal risk. That’s why an isolated alt text fix rarely resolves a compliance problem. A full accessibility audit looks at the entire chain — how content is structured, how it’s labeled, and how it behaves under assistive technology.

I’ve seen businesses invest time fixing alt text after receiving a demand letter, only to discover that their contact forms were completely unusable by keyboard. Fixing one issue without auditing the rest is like patching one hole in a leaky roof.

Common Alt Text Mistakes on Real Websites

The sites I audit most often fall into predictable patterns. E-commerce sites are the worst offenders for images missing alt text altogether, usually because products are uploaded programmatically and alt fields are left blank. Service businesses tend to have decorative banner images marked as informative, or informative infographics with no alt text at all.

One scenario I come back to regularly: a law firm website that had beautifully designed case result graphics — dollar amounts, case types, outcomes — all presented as images with no alt text. Every blind user visiting that site got zero information about what the firm had accomplished. That’s not just an accessibility failure. It’s a business failure. Those case results were meant to build trust, and they were invisible to an entire class of potential clients. After we ran a proper audit and fixed the image descriptions, plus addressed a few other WCAG Level AA gaps, the firm saw measurable improvement in engagement metrics.

What Good Alt Text Actually Looks Like?

Descriptive alt text answers one question: what does this image communicate to someone who cannot see it?

For a headshot of an attorney: `alt=”Attorney Jane Doe, founding partner at Smith Law Group”` — not `alt=”lawyer”` or `alt=”attorney headshot photo professional”`.

For a chart showing case win rates: `alt=”Bar chart showing 87% case success rate across personal injury cases from 2022 to 2025″` — the data matters, not just the fact that a chart exists.

For a purely decorative divider line between page sections: `alt=””` — empty, so screen readers move past it.

Search Engine Journal and Backlinko both offer strong guidance on balancing alt text for SEO and usability, but the core principle is the same from both perspectives: describe what’s actually there.

Testing Your Alt Text Before an Audit

You don’t need a formal accessibility audit to run a basic check. Browser extensions like WAVE or Axe will flag missing and empty alt attributes across your pages in minutes. Run one on your homepage, your main service pages, and any image-heavy pages. Look for red flags: images with no alt attribute at all, images where alt text is a filename, and informative images marked with empty alt tags.

That said, automated tools catch maybe 30-40% of real accessibility issues according to research published by accessibility testing organizations. Manual review — actually using a screen reader to navigate your site — catches the rest. At Acute SEO AI, our AI-powered accessibility scanner combines automated detection with structured reporting so you know exactly what needs to be fixed and why, not just that something failed.

Section 508 compliance, which applies to federal agencies and contractors, uses the same WCAG 2.1 framework. If your business works with government clients, your alt text requirements are identical — and scrutiny tends to be higher.

Take Action on Alt Text This Week

Start with your most-visited pages. Pull up a screen reader — NVDA is free for Windows, VoiceOver is built into Mac and iOS — and navigate through your homepage using only audio. Notice what you hear when the cursor lands on each image. That experience tells you more than any report.

If you want a structured review of where your site stands, schedule a consultation with our team. We’ll walk through your current alt text implementation, flag WCAG 2.1 failures that automated tools miss, and build a remediation plan that addresses your full compliance picture — not just one element of it. You can also explore the Acute SEO AI blog for more practical guidance on web accessibility standards, or learn more about our team and the work we do for businesses navigating compliance in 2026.

Alt text is not a technical afterthought. It’s how real users with real disabilities access real information on your site. Get it right.
